It's the countdown to Christmas and here at Snakehive we’ve set ourselves a challenge: to get fitter and in better shape before the festivities and over indulgence begin - USING ONLY APPS ON OUR PHONES. The humble phone is to become our coach, trainer and motivator.
We’ve researched and delved into fitness related apps to make this plan a reality. We’ve found apps to set fitness goals, support fitness activities, provide music, maps and like-minded communities, and to motivate - or in reality to bribe - with rewards and goodies for progress. So without further ado, here is our definitive guide:
Goal setting: Lifesum Lose weight or eat better - whatever your health goal, Lifesum can help you make it happen. The app combines technology and applied psychology with personal preferences to help people form habits that build towards healthier, happier lives. (Free, Gold £6.99 monthly, £20.99 annually)
Circuit training: Sworkit Simply select the part of your body you want to work out by choosing from over 20 pre-built workouts, or create your own workout. (Free, pro £2.29 monthly)
Running & Cycling: Strava Strava is the social network for athletes – it’s a global community of millions of runners, cyclists and triathletes. The app brings people together from all walks of life to share routes, times and to enter regular challenges for both running and cycling. (Free, pro £4.49 monthly)
Hiking and Cycling: Komoot Another great global community network that provides suggested routes for hikers and bikers. (Free, £6.99 per extra map region)
Swimming: Speedo Fit Tracks key swim stats on the dashboard to keep track of total distance and swim activity. Progress week after week can be measured via distance, duration, and sets. You can even add notes about mood, challenges and progress, and the app offers a community of fellow swimmers. (Free)
Simply everyday walking: Movesum A step counter that motivates you to exercise by connecting how you walk with the things you eat. It displays the calories you’ve burned throughout the day by walking. (Free)

Diet: My Fitness Pal An app that makes calorie counting and food tracking easy. With a huge database (over 5,000,000 foods) and amazingly fast and easy food and exercise entry. (Free, pro £7.99 monthly, £39.99 annually)
Raising funds for charity: Charity Miles For every mile you walk, run or cycle, you’ll help earn money for a charity of your choice. (Free)
Goodies: Bounts Walk, run, swim, cycle, and gym – every activity earns you bounts: points towards goodies like cinema tickets and store vouchers. (Free, pro £9.99 annually)
It’s been an interesting exercise in itself to find apps to help achieve our goals, activities, fitness extras, and briberies. Now all we’ve got to do is make a plan – and follow it. We’re just thinking ahead to all that festive food - the turkey, pigs in blankets, bread sauce, roasted potatoes, mince pies, Xmas pud, brandy butter, chocolate Yule log slices…
