With Pancake Day just around the corner on the 28th of this month, the Snakehive team have been discussing everything pancake related. From different recipes and techniques, to the idea behind Shrove Tuesday of ‘using up/ getting rid’ of perishables before the first day of Lent.
Shrove Tuesday is the last opportunity to use up eggs and fats before embarking on Lent; pancakes are the perfect way of using up these ingredients!
Here are our most useful and interesting app finds for using up ingredients and enjoying Pancake Day to the fullest:
What needs to be used up?
First things first, you need to figure out those perishables... there are apps and gadgets which can help you to organise all of your food, keep track of expiry dates and create shopping lists.
iPantry Manager (Free | iOS)
An app to help you manage all of your supplies in a simple and easy way. Create and manage pantries on the app, divide them according to where they are located. Insert products in the pantry and include their sell-by date etc. Option to filter the product list depending on expiration date. With the pro version you can add more pantries, more products and back up data into Dropbox, iCloud and back up locally.
We are still loving this cool concept in the Snakehive office which has been mentioned in our previous blog, ‘Technology to use with your Smartphone’. This is a wireless camera that fits inside any fridge allowing you to see the contents from anywhere via the app. The app will also help track expiry dates, automatically add items into a shopping list and suggest recipes based on the food in your fridge - although this is more of an investment, we thought it was far too cool to not mention...
Pancake inspiration time...
Get inspiration for your pancake creations from the following recipe apps, which you can search by ingredients, favourite chefs and food bloggers and by healthy preferences.
This app allows you to search by ingredients to include/exclude by dietary needs and by keywords. The news feed on the app is personalised for you and gets smarter with every recipe you save and make. You can also tap on the shopping list to add entire recipes and/or ingredients to the list.
A smart cooking app that offers personalised guidance. When first opening the app personal info is required – this means healthy recipes are tailored to you! There are healthy and less healthy/more indulgent recipes available. There are lots of pancake recipes featured. Two of our favourites are the ‘coconut pancakes’ and the ‘banana pancakes’.
Epicurious (Free | iOS)
There are over 35,000 recipes tested from publishers like Bon Appetit, Gourmet, HarperCollins and more. The app has a Facebook type news feed with the latest recipes and videos - which are updated daily. You can also save your favourite recipes to the recipe box so that they’re only a tap away. The ‘Sweet potato pancakes’ recipe is a particular favourite and incorporates some healthy eating in there too.
Show off your creations on social media
If you've used any of the previous apps mentioned then you'll be just about ready to post a photo of your masterpiece... So why not post to a social media app specifically designed for cooking?!
You can publish recipes at your own speed, for your own private use, to share in the private chat with family or friends or to share publicly on the app. You can take photos while you cook and add instructions. In other words, you can become a professional chef through the help of this app and publish your own online cook book for free!
Why not post your creation on social media and brag to friends about your pancake triumphs?! If you do, make sure to mention Snakehive either via hashtag or a mention (@snakehive).
A final point to make...
If you do plan to use your phone as a sous-chef be sure to check out our Slimline collection as the cases cleverly fold to create a stand for your phone - hands free cooking. We also suggest investing in a tempered glass screen protector to safeguard your phone from any accidental spillages and splashes when cooking.
PS. Know someone who would like this? We'd love you to share with a friend.
